make this.
everyone is talking about fall and i don’t know how to feel about it yet. since the changing of the seasons is pretty inevitable, i’ve decided to think of my favorite fall things to get more comfortable with the idea.
to me, fall means plaid. fall and plaid are best friends for ever. plaid shirts, plaid blankets, plaid pillows, plaid jackets. plaid is warm, cozy, and delightful. plaid goes with apples and crunchy leaves, and boots. plaid goes great with boots.
so i was reading chelsea’s blog and i had this idea that is so easy that i can’t believe i’ve never thought of it before.
plaid pillows out of thrifted mens shirts.
cut off the top at the armpits, and the bottom into a straight line. sew up the top and bottom, and stuff through the placket. or if you’re using an insert, sew up all four sides and use the button placket as the closure on the back.
duh.

my 16 year old has some smashing plaid shirts but i think he would not find it amusing if I crashed his closet for a pillow raid. That would be one pillow fight to witness.

(Gasp) You put the pillow in through the button flap!! Why didn’t I think of that before?? That’s the best idea I’ve seen all week. Thank you!

Another good source for plaid are thrift store skirts and once and a while you can find an old throw …

Beautiful! I use this same technique in the three-hour beginner sewing crash course I teach. It’s super easy, and everyone ends up with a completed project and feels confident about their new skills. And it’s too funny — I just bought several plaid shirts for this fall’s class since plaid is so hot right now!

okay I can’t believe I didn’t think of that either…and of I have a stack of gingham cotton shirts it the slightly weird colours colours that had to come from some little lady who must have looked adorable. It was a thrift shop score! I was going to make a quilt and now I can make pillows and quilts yeah I am so glad I read this today!
